READY COTTAGE HISTORY...

Originally known as the “Old Ready Homestead” the house was built in the 1890’s and was surrounded by a larger parcel of land that at least included the lot next door (No 90) and possibly extended as far as the Church property. This area was the scene of many garden parties and Wedding parties and contained a large water fountain. The property remained in the Ready family until sometime after the death of Mabel Ready in 1967.

There have been two other owners prior to Peter and Pauline Meade who purchased the property in December 2004. They came from Saratoga on the Central Coast of New South Wales and have converted the home into a hosted Bed and Breakfast.

The architectural style is generally called Late Victorian – Timber Boom and is similar in style to lots of older cottages around the Eaglehawk area of Bendigo.

The Ready family had a big presence in Rutherglen in the 1890’s through to the 1960’s. Royston Ready, a local councilor and builder lived here until his death in 1948. A son, Royston, lived at 100 High St. A brother T H Ready was a local Pharmacist.

The family is remembered by a drinking fountain, in High St, donated  by Royston H Ready. There are also some gates on the park in Murray St and there is Ready St on the southern side of town.
